SELF PUBLISHING: Coaching

PREMIER COACHING FOR AUTHORS

This is Val Waldeck’s course which is excellent! She provides info on writing your book, proofreading, editing, publishing, marketing, including advice on grammar, title, sub-titles, back and front page of cover, and many other topics. She also provides templates for publishing online, valuable information on obtaining a USA tax ID number and setting up a PayPal account. I was very blessed to be the recipient of Val’s generosity and I received all of this information for free! I would not have been able to self publish without it! Thank you, Val.

SELF PUBLISHING: Online

My choice to publish online came about because of the global reach of Amazon, Kindle and Smashwords. And through Smashwords to Kobo, Barnes and Noble, Tolino, Odilo and Gardners, Baker and Taylor, and A Gift of God can also be downloaded on Apple iphones. This means that it is available to far more people than through the printing and selling of my book locally, although I will be doing that too.

In South Africa there is a smaller percentage of people buying new books, and the local book stores, including Christian book stores, prefer to stock the well-known authors, especially the overseas ones. So, for a South African author who is publishing for the first time, like myself, publishing online is the best option.

SELF PUBLISHING: Publishers

After research into self-publishing options, I chose to publish online, through Reach Publishers. I received their contract by email, made a few adjustments to suit my needs, which were approved, and in October 2016, I visited their offices in Westville, South Africa, met Warren, and signed the contract. I gave the photograph of Umhloti Beach to him, together with a pencil plan of what I wanted for the cover: the words, the position of them, the colours, the fonts.

Lodewyk sent samples of covers to me. I selected one, and through emails, back and forth, we refined the cover, until in January 2017, we had the final product, just as I wanted it to be.

After checking and rechecking my manuscript countless times, I passed it on to Reach at the end of November. Lodewyk again patiently answered my email questions and corrections until it was perfect.

The publisher’s month of leave over the Christmas holidays and my month of illness in March and April delayed the process but finally, with Anishka’s help, the publishing on Amazon, Kindle and Smashwords was achieved on 10th April 2017.

SELF PUBLISHING JOURNEY

SELF-PUBLISHING JOURNEY

Self-publishing is possible. I did it!

It has taken me seven years, but I have now self-published A Gift of God on Amazon, Kindle and Smashwords.

Hard work too, but the royalties are higher and the rewards greater.

I was blessed to have my daughter, Margaret Lang, from Margaret Lang Photography, take the photographs for the cover for free and my son-in-law, Chris Lang, set up my webpage for free. I am very grateful to both of them for doing so.

It is wonderful to see my book in print, with the layout and cover that I have long planned for…the photograph of Umhloti Beach, which is the setting of one of the scenes in the book, with the waves splashing over the rocks.

Thank You, Lord, for giving me the strength to keep going!
